Top 5 Uterine Fibroid Questions Answered
As Interventional Radiologists in Miami with decades of experience, we have heard thousands of patient questions regarding the subject of uterine fibroids. Remember, uterine fibroids are more common than you would think and educating yourself with different treatment options is something we strongly encourage. Here are the top 5 questions with brief answers to help you with your research.
1. Why do I have fibroids?
Every case is unique but generally, fibroids are linked to increased estrogen. Commonly, fibroids begin developing after pregnancy and before menopause. If you began seeing symptoms around this time, then this may very well be the cause.
2. How do I know if I have normal heavy periods or fibroid-related bleeding?
It may difficult for you to know the difference but usually, fibroid-related bleeding comes in the form of large blood clots which lasts for a longer than normal period of time.
3. What are some of the other fibroid symptoms?
Some of the common symptoms of fibroids are:
- Abdominal bloating
- Unexplained weight gain without any dietary changes and you are not pregnant
- Frequent urination
- In some instances, fibroids can press on nerves and organs, thereby causing, leg or back pain, even constipation
4. Do I need to remove my uterus?
So many women are initially told upon being diagnosed with fibroids that they should do a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus). Though this is the most common method, there are some very effective minimally invasive options as well, such as a uterine fibroids embolization (UFE). 5. Is there medication that can help with fibroids?
There are drugs such as birth control medication and others which release hormones or act as estrogen receptors or progesterone receptors. Many of these have undesirable side effects, so it is important to ask about the risks and how effective they really are.
